Teach One to Lead One®(T1L1) is a community mentoring program that teaches Universal
Principles to lead students into a life of purpose and potential.
T1L1 includes a well-developed curriculum designed to create a dynamic and innovative
experience for youth. The program is multifaceted, featuring: storytelling and role
modeling, small and large group discussions, video presentations, in-service learning
activities, student recognition events, and ongoing evaluations
No, T1L1 is not a standalone class. Rather, it complements existing youth development
initiatives in schools, juvenile court systems, community organizations, and other youth
centered programs. Delivered through weekly sessions, the program introduces students
to universal principles and life skills, which they are encouraged to apply in their daily lives.

T1L1 mentors are caring, vetted volunteers, trained for safety and quality. Prospective
volunteer mentors undergo background checks and comprehensive training before
receiving materials to facilitate T1L1 sessions. Each school or district may have specific
procedures for allowing volunteers on campus.
T1L1 transforms communities by equipping students with tools to: internalize universal
principles, make ethical choices, build healthy habits, lead themselves and others,
positively influence peers, and engage in community service.
The program fosters collaboration between schools, homes, and communities, creating
environments where students feel valued and cared for. Schools often use T1L1 to improve
school culture, while probation officers and youth workers employ it to provide clear
guidance to at-risk teens.
T1L1 recognizes the challenges youth face, such as violence, low academic performance,
substance abuse, and lack of trusted adults. Through meaningful relationships with
mentors, students gain practical tools to: combat unique challenges, evaluate actions and
consequences, develop healthy habits This mentoring approach encourages behavioral
changes, leading to personal success and positive community impact.
T1L1’s effectiveness is rigorously evaluated through:
- Pre and post-program student self-assessments
- Student journals (Elementary) documenting learned principles and action plans
- Teacher feedback on program impact and areas for improvement

Since its inception in 1996, T1L1 has been implemented across a wide range of settings:
conventional and alternative elementary, middle, and high schools, juvenile court sessions.

The program has operated in several U.S. states such as Arizona, Georgia, Indiana,
Louisiana, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Internationally, T1L1 has reached students in El
Salvador, Ecuador, Peru, Switzerland, and South Africa. T1L1 continues to empower
students and mentors worldwide, fostering leadership and community transformation.
